Die Welt der Mathematik wird rührig und alle Augen blicken auf die Südhalbkugel. Zum ersten Mal in seiner 120-jährigen Geschichte soll der „Internationale Mathematikerkongress“ (ICM) dort stattfinden, genauer gesagt 2018 in Rio de Janeiro. Alle vier Jahre zieht der größte Kongress der Disziplin tausende von Mathematikerinnen und Mathematikern aus aller Welt an. Der letzte ist schon fast drei Jahre her, die „Olympiade“ geht also in die Schlussphase.
Fields-Medaille, Nevanlinna-Preis, Carl-Friedrich-Gauß-Preis, Chern-Medaille – auch beim ICM 2018 wird es wieder viele Medaillen und Ehrungen aber auch wissenschaftlichen Aus- und Schlagabtausch geben, werden doch viele Hochdekorierte in Rio de Janeiro erwartet. Vom 1. bis 9. August 2018 soll der Kongress tagen, wie immer ausgerichtet von der Schirmherrschaft der Internationalen Mathematischen Union. Die Organisationsverantwortung haben 2018 die Brasilianische Mathematische Gesellschaft (SMB) und das Institut für reine und angewandte Mathematik in Rio de Janeiro (IMPA).

The Organizing Committee, IMPA and the Brazilian Mathematical Society will offer 500 travel grants for mathematicians, young and senior, from developing countries to attend the Congress; 200 of those grants are for mathematicians working in Latin-American countries. The list of eligible countries and detailed information on how to apply will be published soon.

The list of grantees will be published by September 04, 2017. Travel support will be conditioned to registration in ICM 2018 and will be paid upon arrival to Rio de Janeiro, during the Congress.
Pre-registration and registration
Pre-registration, which will allow participants to enter their personal date, book accommodation and participation in social activities etc, will start on September 04, 2017. Pre-registration is a necessary condition for submission of abstracts and proceedings articles. Registration will have to be completed by the following dates:
Registration
- Early Advance: By April 27, 2018, Reduced registration fee.
- Advance: By July 13, 2018, (Less) Reduced registration fee.
- Onsite GA: July 26 - 28, 2018, Full fee. No access to the opening ceremony. General Assembly participants only.
- Onsite ICM: July 29 through August 09, 2018; Full fee. No access to the opening ceremony.
Short communications and posters
Participants will have the opportunity to submit abstracts of short oral communications or posters to be presented at the Congress.

The selection results will be published by February 28, 2018. Acceptance of an abstract will be conditioned to full registration within the Early Advanced period: failure to complete the registration by April 27, 2018 will cause the acceptance to be cancelled.
