  • Keywords and Phrases: Topological solid state systems, Bulk-boundary correspondence, K-theoryand non-commutative geometry
Abstract: Topological insulators are solid state systems of independent electrons for whichthe Fermi level lies in a mobility gap, but the Fermi projection is nevertheless topologicallynon-trivial, namely it cannot be deformed into that of a normal insulator. This non-trivial topology isencoded in adequately defined invariants and implies the existence of surface states that arenot susceptible to Anderson localization. This non-technical review reports on recent progress in the understanding of the underlying mathematical structures, with a particular focus on index theory.

On Sign Preservation for Clotheslines, Curtain Rods, Elastic Membranes and Thin Plates, Seiten 275-320

  • Keywords and Phrases: Positivity, Sign preservation, Second and fourth order elliptic, Kirchhoff plate
  • Mathematics Subject Classification: 35J40 - 35J08 - 34B27
Abstract: All problems mentioned in the title seem to have one thing in common. Whenever a force is applied in one direction, the object moves in that direction. At least this iswhat one might expect. The corresponding boundary value problems contain differential equations of second order for line and membrane, while rod, or beam, and plate are modeledthrough fourth order differential equations. How a positive source will give a positivesolution crucially depends on this order and the boundary conditions. We will present a survey concerning the so-called positivity preserving property for these various models.

Zusammenfassung: Egbert Brieskorn verstarb am 11. Juli 2013, wenige Tage nach seinem 77. Geburtstag.

  • Mathematics Subject Classification: 20B22
  • Keywords and Phrases: sharply 2-transitive, free product, nearfield
Abstract: The finite sharply 2-transitive groups were classified by Zassenhaus in the 1930's. They essentially all look like the group of affine linear transformations ax+b for some field (or at leastnear-field) K. However, the question remained open whether the same is true for infinite sharply 2-transitive groups. There has been extensive work on the structures associated to such groups indicating that Zassenhaus' results might extend to the infinite setting. For many specific classes of groups, like Lie groups, linear groups, or groups definable in o-minimal structures it was indeed proved that all examples inside the given class arise in this way as affine groups. However, it recently turned out that the reason for the lack of a general proof was the fact that there are plenty of sharply 2-transitive groups which do not arise from fields or near-fields! In fact, it is not too hard to construct concrete examples (see below). In this note, we survey general sharply n-transitive groups and describe how to construct examples not arising from fields.

  • Keywords and Phrases: divergent series, numeric-symbolic methods, low-rank approximation, singular moduli, self-avoiding random walk, Riemann R-function
Abstract: In 2002, L.N. Trefethen of Oxford University challenged the scientific community by ten intriguing mathematical problems to be solved, numerically, to ten digit accuracy each (I was one of the successful contestants; in 2004, jointly with three others of them, I published a book on the manifold ways of solving those problems). In this paper, I collect some new and noteworthy insights and developments that have evolved around those problems in the last decade or so. In the course of my tales, I will touch mathematical topics as diverse as divergent series, Ramanujan summation, low-rank approximations of functions, hybrid numeric-symbolic computation, singular moduli, self-avoiding random walks, the Riemann prime counting function, and winding numbers of planar Brownian motion. As was already the intention of the book, I hope to encourage the reader to take a broad view of mathematics, since one lasting moral of Trefethen's contest is that overspecialization will provide too narrow a view for one with a serious interest in computation.

  • Keywords and Phrases: Optimal control; receding horizon control; model predictive control; turnpikeproperty; dissipativity
Abstract: In this survey, receding horizon control is presented as a method for obtaining approximately optimal solutions to infinite horizon optimal control problems byiteratively solving a sequence of finite horizon optimal control problems. We investigate conditionsunder which we can obtain mathematically rigorous approximation results for this approach. A keyingredient of our analysis is the so-called turnpike property of optimal control problems.
