“Demailly Prize for Open Science in Mathematics” ausgeschrieben

Die französischen Mathematik-Gesellschaften SMF, SMAI und SFdS* haben zusammen mit dem „Epijournal de Géométrie Algébrique“ die Schaffung des "Jean-Pierre Demailly-Preises für offene Wissenschaft in der Mathematik" beschlossen. Der Preis wird ab 2024 alle zwei Jahre verliehen. Er soll ein Projekt auszeichnen, das zur offenen Wissenschaft („open science“) in der Mathematik beiträgt, sei es im Bereich der wissenschaftlichen Veröffentlichungen, der Zusammenarbeit zwischen Mathematiker*innen untereinander oder im Bereich der freien Software in der Mathematik. Der Preis soll die Bedeutung dieser Themen stärker hervorheben und den Schwerpunkt auf Beiträge legen, die der gesamten Wissenschaft zu gute kommen (und nicht auf individuelle Erfolge). Bewerbungsfrist ist der 29. Februar 2024.
Die Preisverleihung findet während der EPIGA-Konferenz 2024 statt und zwar am Nachmittag des 12. Juni 2024, der der „offenen Wissenschaft in der Mathematik“ gewidmet ist, und an dem die Gewinner*innen ihr Projekt vorstellen sollen. Symbolischer Preis ist ein Gömböc.
Die Preisjury ist prominent besetzt. Ihr gehören zum Beispiel an: Merieme Chadid, Präsidentin des Internationalen Wissenschaftsrates der UNESCO, als Präsidentin und Timothy Gowers, Gründer von Polymath und der Open Access-Initiative „The cost of knowledge“ und Fielsmedaillist des Jahres 1998, als „Co-Präsident“ der Jury.
Benannt wurde der Preis nach dem französischen Mathematiker Jean-Pierre Demailly, ab 1983 Professor an der Universität Grenoble Alpes (UGA) und Mitglied der Französischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, verstorben am 17. März 2022. Er war sowohl in der Forschung als auch in der Lehre an der UGA sehr engagiert und war fast 40 Jahre lang eine der Säulen des dortigen Institut Fourier. Durch seinen außergewöhnlichen wissenschaftlichen Werdegang hat er einen wesentlichen Beitrag zu dessen Entwicklung und internationaler Ausstrahlung geleistet. The French mathematical societies SMF, SMAI and SFdS*, in association with the Epijournal de Géométrie Algébrique, have decided to create the "Jean-Pierre Demailly Prize for Open Science in Mathematics". This biennial prize, to be awarded for the first time in 2024, will recognize a project that contributes to open science in mathematics, whether in scientific publishing, collaboration between mathematicians, or free software in mathematics. The prize aims to further highlight the importance of these issues, as well as emphasizing contributions for the benefit of the scientific community as a whole, rather than individual successes. As a symbolic gesture, a Gömbök will be presented to the winning project at the prize-giving ceremony, which will take place during the epiga 2024 conference, and more specifically on June 12, 2024 during an afternoon dedicated to open science in mathematics, during which the winning project will be presented by its initiators.
The prize jury is made up of prominent figures. It includes, for example: Merieme Chadid, President of the International Science Council of UNESCO as President and Timothy Gowers, founder of Polymath and the (open access) initiative "The cost of knowledge" and Fiels Medalist of 1998 as "Co-President" of the jury.
The prize was named after the French mathematician Jean-Pierre Demailly, professor at the University of Grenoble Alpes (UGA) from 1983 on and member of the French Academy of Sciences, who died on March 17, 2022. He was very involved in both research and teaching at the UGA and was one of the pillars of UGA’s Institut Fourier for almost 40 years. La SMF, la SMAI et la SFdS, associées à l’Epijournal de Géométrie Algébrique, ont décidé la création du "prix Jean-Pierre Demailly pour la science ouverte en mathématiques". Ce prix bisannuel, dont la première édition se déroulera en 2024, récompensera un projet contribuant à la science ouverte dans le domaine des mathématiques, que ce soit pour l’édition scientifique, la collaboration entre mathématicien-ne-s, ou les logiciels libres en mathématiques. Ce prix vise à souligner davantage l'importance de ces questions, ainsi qu'à mettre l’accent sur les contributions au bénéfice de l’ensemble de la communauté scientifique, plutôt que sur des réussites individuelles. Applications possibles jusqu’au 29 février 2024.
A titre symbolique, un Gömböc sera offert au projet lauréat lors de la remise du prix, qui aura lieu pendant la conférence epiga 2024, et plus précisément le 12 juin 2024 lors d'une après-midi consacrée à la science ouverte en mathématiques et au cours de laquelle le projet lauréat sera présenté par ses initiateurs ou initiatrices.
Le jury du prix est composé de personnalités. Il comprend par exemple : Miriam Chadid, présidente du Conseil international pour la science de l'UNESCO en tant que présidente et Timothy Gowers, fondateur de Polymath et de l'initiative open access "The cost of knowledge" et médaillé Fiels de l'année 1998 en tant que "co-président" du jury.
Le prix porte le nom du mathématicien français Jean-Pierre Demailly, professeur à l'Université Grenoble Alpes (UGA) à partir de 1983 et membre de l'Académie des sciences française, décédé le 17 mars 2022. Très impliqué dans la recherche et l'enseignement à l'UGA, il a été pendant près de 40 ans l'un des piliers de l'Institut Fourier de cette université.
